2021-2022 Jr. Luthier Apprentice Position

Luthier, ˈlo͞odēər – noun: a maker of stringed instruments such as violins or guitars. In this case, a luthier apprentice is a string instrument repair assistant.

We are seeking a Miami String Luthier Apprentice for this year. Ideally, a high school or college student pursuing musical training locally in the South Florida region. This is a unique opportunity for someone that’s passionate about music and also wants to understand and learn the skill of repairing and restoring string instruments.

The ideal candidate would travel to the Miami String shop 1-2 days per week and spend up to 8 hours weekly in the shop working alongside our owner.

In order to qualify, the following items must be submitted ASAP:

  • Academic recommendation – music teacher or private teacher preferred
  • Parent approval, if under 18
  • 3.0 GPA
  • School music participation and/or secondary music participation
  • Daily practice
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Weekly commitment
  • Associated fees for auditions and travel

In exchange, our Miami String company will provide the apprentice with invaluable knowledge, training, and hands-on experience, 1-hour complimentary private music lesson weekly must be prearranged outside of scheduled apprentice learning hours, additional help with preparations for audition and concerts, access to string music workshops or festivals at a discounted rate, potential job opportunity, and more. There is no cost to the student to participate in this program and it is an unpaid opportunity. The apprentice internship program is 52-weeks or 1-year in length, exact date TBD based on the candidate’s schedule.
